Meet the Partners: Refractory Materials for Hydrogen-Based Steel Reheating

Our “Meet the Partners” interview series continues, introducing the people and organisations working together within the TWINGHY project and exploring their contribution to the transition towards more sustainable steel production.

In this episode, Thorsten Tonnesen, Senior Scientist and Head of the Refractory Research Group at RWTH Aachen University (Germany), explains the role of refractory materials in the transition towards hydrogen-based combustion in steel reheating furnaces.

The research carried out within the project has already provided encouraging results, showing that the main refractory materials tested remain stable under hydrogen-containing atmospheres, with no critical degradation mechanisms identified.
